We've Seen It All

There are many kinds of code violations but below are those we see most often. If you don't see your specific issue listed, contact us - we can help.

01

Incomplete Documentation

Homeowners who completed remodeling work that requires a permit, but never received it, or contractors that expanded the scope of remodeling beyond the permitted code, are subject to a fine and an injunction by the municipality until the violation is either removed or fixed.

02

Stair Code Violations

The most common violation is height and size - either from the bottom floor, top landing, or between each stair. Proper riser height, tread depth, and handrail specifications must meet current building codes for safety compliance.

03

Smoke Detector Issues

Smoke detectors must be hardwired per code and interconnected - once a single detector is triggered, all others must follow as well. Battery-only detectors in older homes often require full system upgrades.

04

Incorrect Bathroom Venting

Unless a window to the exterior of an existing bathroom is present, an exhaust fan is most likely required for venting. Improper venting can lead to mold, moisture damage, and air quality issues.

05

Weak Joists & Beams

Framing is crucial for the safety of any structure. In some cases, too long of a supporting beam or too thin floor/roof joists can trigger a violation. Structural reinforcement may be required.

06

Electrical System Violations

Outdated wiring, improper panel installations, lack of GFCI outlets in wet areas, and overloaded circuits are common electrical violations that require licensed electrician repair.

07

Egress Window Issues

Bedrooms require properly sized egress windows for emergency exit. Many basement conversions and additions fail to meet minimum opening dimensions required by code.

08

Unpermitted Additions

Room additions, converted garages, finished basements, and deck constructions often lack proper permits. These require retroactive permits and inspections to verify compliance.
